Singing Techniques for Your Own Style

Singing Techniques for Your Own Style of Singing

There are various singing techniques used by various artists around the world. Some of them refer to the actual singing done by the singer; others refer to the physical techniques used to amplify the sound. Unbelievably there are great deals of singing techniques to consider. Every singer is different though and has their own unique technique, so in the end, it’s something you have to develop on your own.

The first thing to consider is what type of singing you want information on. You have opera, jazz, heavy metal, rock, soft rock, techno, country, rap, and many others. Often the basic singing techniques deal with controlling various parts of the body. Anyway, you are probably asking, “Wait, what does controlling the body have to do with singing?” Well, the answer to that question is very simple; it has everything to do with it.

Vocalization Techniques

Regardless of all the vocalization techniques that you may teach by an instructor, or mentor you still, need to maintain control over your body. The most important thing to maintain control over is your heart rate and breathing rate. If the heart rate goes too high, the body will start making the lungs draw breath quicker in order to oxygenate the blood faster. This needed to keep up with the added activity.

How to Hold Notes

This can through off many singers mid-song because they need to draw breath sooner than expected. Actual singing techniques may include tips and tricks on how to hold notes a little bit longer, or useless air doing it, but this is generally artist specific. You may have noticed during contests that many singers move around, or take poses when they vocalize or talk for a long period. This is because your posture can affect how you breathe, and how much power you can through into your voice.

Not joking, you have a large muscle over your stomach called the diaphragm that works with your respiratory system. That’s the system that’s responsible for your breathing, mainly including your lungs, and attached muscles, just in case you didn’t know. Different poses can put varying amounts of pressure on this muscle, and that in turn affects the sound and power you can put out. There is no universal pose to strike to get the best results, everyone’s body is different, and the best poses are different for every type of song.

Rapid Succession

Some artists walk around to keep themselves limber, and relaxed. Others may run around, jump, act crazy, and do strange things on stage simply because they have the energy and its part of their show. Actual vocal singing techniques include holding notes for a long time, uttering them in rapid succession, and being able to change from one note to another at a lower or higher end of the spectrum fluently.

In close singing techniques, are varied and depend greatly on the singer. Everyone learns the basic techniques from their instructors and tutors at first. After this, they take the basics and make their own techniques for their own style of singing. After all, if we all used the same techniques and the same styles then we would have no original singing talent now, would we?

Skyler Jett is a prolific singer, songwriter, and producer. He worked with many top musicians, such as Stevie Wonder, Celine Dion, and Aretha Franklin. Skyler started singing in church and fell in love with jazz and R&B at an early age.
